James was a natural leader. Whether serving in the United States Army, during his 45 years in management at Saint-Gobain, mentoring young people, or supporting charitable organizations, he consistently worked to bring out the best in those around him. He devoted his time and talents to the following organizations: the Knights of Columbus, Boy and Girl Scouts of America, the Fraternal Order of Elks, the American Legion, and various Catholic church groups.
Those who knew him will remember his warmth, generosity, and the genuine interest he took in the lives of others.
He is survived by his loving wife, Elaine; son, Jeffery (April) Downey, daughter, Jennifer (Matt) Tichota; and grandchildren, Ciara, Patrick, Sigmund, and Wren. James also leaves behind siblings Doug Downey, Anne (Pat) Whitehead; brother-in-law Lawrence Lyskawa, sister-in-law Judith Jahn; nephew DJ, and nieces Elizabeth and Emily. He was grateful for the continued support of many cherished cousins whose friendship carried him through the past year.
He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ralph and Eleanor Downey; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Raymond and Victoria Lyskawa; sister-in-law, Ellen Downey; and niece, Jessica Beckner.
The Downey family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff at CHI Hospice.
