Mary Ellen Porter was born on March 15, 1956 to Arnold and Velma Sheldahl in Greenfield, Iowa. She grew up, attended and graduated with a high school diploma in Stuart, Iowa.

After high school, she worked while attending college in Des Moines studying horticulture. While attending school, she met the love of her life, Gregg Thomas Porter.

After college, she worked locally so that Gregg could pursue his career in auto body. Once he was established, they started their family by giving birth to their first child, Sara Ann. Three years later, they gave birth to their second daughter, Kari Lynn.

Early in life Gregg suffered a heart attack, which no longer allowed him to work. So Mary started working full time as a laundry attendant at the nursing home in Elkorn.

After Gregg and Mary moved their family a few times looking for the right place to call home. They happily settled down in Malvern, Iowa.

Mary worked at the Nishna Cottage in Malvern as the laundry attendant for many years. When Nishna Cottage closed, she began working at Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor. Her last place of employment was FBG in housekeeping at Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. Unfortunately, after suffering from a bad fall at work, she was placed on disability as well.

In February 2021, due to declining health issues, Mary and Gregg moved to the Tabor Manor Care Center in Tabor. Where on March 25th 2022, she was diagnosed with an incurable infection of the heart and had to be placed on hospice. On April 4, 2022 Mary Ellen Porter passed away at Tabor Manor Care Center, Tabor Iowa.
